BLU-Space Workshop: Setting the course for U-Space in Hamburg

On March 11 and 12, the partners of the BLU-Space consortium met in Altena and Lüdenscheid to advance the development of a U-Space structure in Hamburg. The two-day workshop offered a mix of practical demonstrations and strategic planning - with the common goal of enabling the safe and efficient integration of drones into the lower airspace.

Day 1: Drone logistics in practice
A highlight of the first day was the demonstration flight of the X25 drone from Morpheus Logistik GmbH at J.D. Geck GmbH in Altena. The drone was tested in combination with the landing pad from the SIDDA project - a microhub developed by Karl Koerschulte GmbH and J.D. Geck and produced by J.D. Geck. This technology is an important building block for automated and efficient delivery by drone.

In addition to practical testing, the focus was on the further development of test scenarios for Hamburg. The participants discussed which processes are necessary to safely integrate drones into the lower airspace and which infrastructural prerequisites need to be created for this. The intensive exchange between the various stakeholders is essential to advance the implementation of U-Space in Germany and to lay the foundation for future-oriented air mobility.

Day 2: Strategy, synergies & next steps
On the second day, the consortium partners gathered at Koerschulte in Lüdenscheid to set the course for 2025. In a review of the year, the progress made in 2024 was analyzed and the lessons learned were consolidated. On this basis, a concrete strategy was developed for the further implementation of the U-Space structure in Hamburg.A key issue was the coordination of the various work packages within the consortium, as technological, regulatory and operational aspects are closely interlinked. In addition to internal interdependencies, external factors also play a crucial role - in particular, if and when the German U-Space legislation will be passed and what impact this might have on the implementation in Hamburg.

With a clear roadmap and valuable input from the workshop, the project partners are now taking the next steps. The goal is clear: to establish a functioning U-Space structure in Hamburg that enables the safe and efficient integration of drones.

A big thank you to all participants for two inspiring days full of exchange, ideas and collaboration! Together we shape the future of airspace.
